* Description: The Theatre covers the story after the fire in Yeosu Foreigners’ Detention Center to the time when bereaved families and injured persons finished negotiation about compensation and left. We ask the audience about the truth of the fire incident by mixing testimony and arguments of several people. However, we never tell a specific truth but we make the audience imagine a direction of the truth and how it looks like.

* Features of the Work: The performance is given on a broadcasting studio without the audience and broadcasted real time online via cameras and the broadcasting system installed in the studio. The audience are individual web users beyond cameras. Documentary images that Park Kyong Ju shot in Yeosu Seongsim Hospital when the fire occurred are edited real time to be aired with a half dramatic play for the audience. The studio reborn with simple white cubes without a specific stage setting well demonstrates memories and episodes of the tragedy occurring eight years ago. * Yeosu Story

On February 11, 2007 at 4 in the morning a fire broke out in cell 304 of Yeosu Foreigners’ Detention Center.(The 3rd floor detained male migrant workers at the time of fire) A total of 9 out of 55 detained migrant workers suffocated and died in toxic fumes from the urethanes mats: Sung-Nam Kim (Chinese, ethnic Korean), Yelchin (Uzbekinstan), Kwangseok Kim (Chinese, ethnic Korean), Nubo (Chinese, Han Chinese), Taebok Lee (Chinese, ethnic Korean), Seonhee Jin (Chinese, Han Chinese), Jeokwo Jang (Chinese, Han Chinese), Kwanchoong Son (Chinese, Han Chinese), and Shiachoon Lee (Chinese, Han Chinese). Haepa Whang (Chinese, Han Chinese) among the seriously injured also died while treated in the intensive care unit. A total of 10 migrants died of the fire at the Yeosu Foreigners’ Detention Center. Some of the survivals of the fire got compensation while others didn’t. Most of them still suffer from aftereffects of the fire and do not receive due attention from the world.

사회적 기업 샐러드에서 여수 외국인보호소 화재 화재참사 8주기를 맞아 를 창작공연 ‘여수처음 중간 끝’(극본 & 연출: 박경주)의 재공연을 오는 2월 11일 (수) 생방송 미디어 실험극의 형태로 무대에 올린다.

2007년 2월 11일 새벽 4시경 여수외국인보호소 3층 304호에서 난 화재로 10명의 이주노동자가 희생된 사건을 다루고 있는 본 공연은 2010년 9월 제10회 서울변방연극제에서 초연 무대를 마친 샐러드의 창작 공연으로 당시 화재참사 생존자와 이주민 당사자들이 무대에 배우로 올라 큰 반향을 불러 일으킨 바 있다.

참사 8주기를 맞아 준비된 이번 공연은 화재가 일어난 시간에 맞춰 새벽 4시 16분과 일반 공연 시간인 오후 7시30분 일반 관객 없이 두 차례 진행되며, 동영상사이트인 유스트림코리아를 통해 무료로 생중계된다.

이번 공연은 한국인 배우 출연진 위주로 구성되었으며 초연 당시 누락됐던 대본의 일부와 미공개 여수화재참사 기록 영상이 추가 공개된다. 방송스튜디오에서 관객 없이 공연이 펼쳐지고 극장에 설치된 카메라와 방송시스템에 의해 공연은 인터넷으로 생중계된다. 관객은 카메라 너머 웹 공간에 존재하는 개개인의 웹유저들이다. 여수 화재 참사 당시 연출자가 직접 여수 성심병원에서 촬영한 다큐멘터리 영상들이 실험적인 극과 함께 관객을 만난다.

2007년 2월 11일 새벽 전남 여수 외국인보호소에서 화재가 발생해 10명의 이주노동자가 숨졌다. 이 연극은 여수화재참사 직후부터 유족과 부상자들이 보상금 협상을 마치고 출국하기까지의 사건을 다룬다. 연극은 여러 등장인물의 증언과 주장을 모자이크하면서 여수 외국인보호소 화재 참사의 진실이 무엇인지 관객에게 묻는다. 여수 화재 참사에 경악하고 진실을 밝히기 위해 장례식장을 오간 사람은 많지만 여전히 여수 외국인보호소 화재 참사의 진실은 베일에 가려져 있기 때문이다. 그러나 연극은 절대 여수 화재 참사의 진실이 무엇인지 구체적으로 말해주지 않는다. 다만 그 진실의 방향이 어디인지, 어떤 모습인지 관객들이 상상하게 만든다.

문래동 극장 샐러드붐에서 관객없이 공연이 펼쳐지고 극장에 설치된 카메라와 방송시스템에 의해 공연은 인터넷으로 생중계된다. 관객은 카메라 너머 웹 공간에 존재하는 개개인의 웹유저들이다. 여수 화재 참사 당시 연출자이자 극작가 박경주가 직접 여수 성심병원에서 촬영한 다큐멘터리 영상들이 反드라마적인 극과 함께 관객을 만난다. 특별한 무대장치 없이 간소한 화이트 큐브로 재탄생한 극장은 8년 전 참사의 기억과 에피소드를 담담하게 표현한다.

최근 세월호 참사를 지켜보면서 여수 외국인 보호소 화재 참사를 떠올릴 수밖에 없다. 공연시간 4시 16분은 세월호 참사가 일어난 4월 16일을 가리키며 시스템에 의해 희생당한 분들을 추모하기 위한 의미가 담겨있다.
