Migrant Workers in Berlin

The artist Park Kyong Ju took pictures at the entrance of the immigration office Berlin every day for a month, and as a result, a total of 300 portraits of migrant workers were obtained.

I did not have a concrete idea to work on the theme of ‘migration’ or ‘migrant workers’ when I first started the photographs, ‘Attendants,’ in 1999. While trying to find ways to resist discriminations that I witnessed in Berlin, I just wanted to picture migrant workers.

I decided the Berlin Immigration Bureau as the shooting place for my photographs. The Immigration Bureau is the place where every foreigner living in Berlin has to visit for his or her residence permissions. Foreigners experience insults at the place and the offended memories are usually strong enough to remain as unforgetful ones. Visiting the place gives us clear answers to such questions as ‘who we are’ and ‘where we came from.’

I visited the Immigration Bureau office everyday and took pictures of migrant workers who visited there. I asked them to ‘pose’ in front of a camera rather than photographing them unnoticed. ‘Posing’ means that the photographed watches the ‘unknown watcher’ through the lens of the camera.

For two months, I visited the Immigration office at the time of opening. At the beginning. I had difficulties to ask people for a photograph but soon I could meet many people who were willing to be portrayed. As a way to return my gratitudes for their permissions, I sent them their photographs of a postcard size by mail.

Work Title: Attendees

Installation with 6 Slide-projection & 2 video -projection & sound-collage@ Group Exhibition ‘Conncted, Kommunikation Museum Berlin, 1999

In this work, about 300 photos of migrant workers in Berlin are projected as slides, and at the same time, found footage and sound installation collage. In addition, photos documenting the performance ‘ First Aid’ by the artist inside the Berlin Immigration Office building are also projected as slides.

박경주 작가는 한 달간 매일 출입국관리소 입구에서 사진촬영을 진행하여 총 300여명의 이주노동자의 인물사진을 결과물로 얻었다

1999년 “참석인 Attendees” 작품의 제작을 시작할 당시에는 내가 표현해보고자 하는 테마가 ‘이주’라는 구체적인 생각은 없었다. 처음에는 그저 외국인으로서 생활하면서 내가 본 차별에 대항해서 내가 할 수 있는 작품에 대한 고민을 하면서 베를린에서 만난 외국인 노동자의 모습을 사진에 담아보고자 했다. 촬영장소는 베를린 출입국관리사무소로 정했다. 베를린에 거주하는 외국인이라면 누구나 거주허가 문제로 이곳을 방문해야하는데 이때 외국인으로서 느끼는 모멸감은 독일생활 전체에서 잊혀지지 않는 기억으로 남기 때문이다. 외국생활에서 우리자신이 누구인지, 어디에서 왔는지, 자신의 정체성에 대해 분명해지는 것은 바로 이 곳을 방문할 때이다. 나는 매일 베를린 출입국관리소를 방문했다. 그리고 이곳을 방문하는 이주노동자들을 사진에 담았다. 촬영방법은 몰래 찍는 방법보다는 그들에게 포즈를 취해줄 것을 요구하는 방법을 택했다. 포즈를 취하는 행위는 카메라 저편의 미지의 관찰자를 바라본다는 것을 의미한다. 두 달 정도 출입국관리소가 문을 여는 시간에 맞춰 촬영하러 갔고 처음에는 사람들을 섭외하는데 어려움이 많았지만 나중에는 많은 사람을 섭외 할 수 있었다. 초상권에 대한 감사의 표시로 나는 엽서 크기로 인화한 사진을 나중에 우편으로 본인들에게 보내줬다. -박경주 작가 노트 1999
