“We will become a salad that harmonizes taste and aroma, recognized as a worthy creative group.”

In an interview with the Kyunghyang Newspaper on the 9th, Park Kyong Ju (46, photo), CEO of the multicultural theater troupe Salad, said, “I will dream of a happy ten years as the past ten years have been difficult.”

This year marks the 10th year since CEO Park established the Migrant Workers Broadcasting Station, an alternative internet media outlet, to support migrants. Since 2005, as a reporter and operator of the Migrant Workers Broadcasting Station, she has devoted himself to publicizing the human rights issues of migrant workers. In 2009, it changed its business direction to multicultural broadcasting station Salad TV and Salad Theater. This is because she judged that the grievances of migrants would be better conveyed when the focus was on “cultural diversity.”

After graduating from the College of Fine Arts at Hongik University, she initially dreamed of making films. The trigger to pay attention to the issue of migrant workers was the ‘neo-Nazis’ she encountered while studying in Germany. She felt ‘yellow racism’ in Europe, which she thought was open to other cultures, and was greatly shocked. After returning to Korea in 2001, when the issue of migrant workers became an issue, she started supporting migrant workers through a photo exhibition. That didn’t fill her up, so she set up a multilingual broadcasting station.

In February 2007, when migrant workers were sacrificed in a fire at the Yeosu Foreigners’ Detention Center (Immigration Office), Park closely covered the case for two months. This incident led CEO Park to the establishment of the theater company. It is because she “felt that the fundamental problem cannot be solved with only the facts.”

She said that she could not forget the experimental play <Yeosu Beginning, Middle, End>, which she released in 2010. This is because the curtain rose with an actual press conference by a migrant worker who survived the Yeosu Foreigners’ Detention Center accident, and there were waves. “The migrant members who played the victim’s bereaved family suffered psychological pain when the accident victim appeared in their dreams. That’s how the members were immersed. They even cried backstage in the middle of the performance.”

Running the troupe was also difficult. While preparing for the performance, the electricity was cut off and actors were stamping their feet because they did not have the money to come to the concert hall. CEO Park repeated “Let’s endure, let’s endure” each time, and said that now the situation of the members is a little better and they can concentrate on creating.

Salad, which consists of married migrant women and international students from Mongolia, the Philippines, China, and Kyrgyzstan, was certified as a social enterprise by the Korean government last month. ⒸKyunghyang Newspaper, 2014

“이주노동자의 ‘문화 다양성’ 어우러진 창작집단 만들 터”

-다문화 극단 ‘샐러드’ 10년 이끈 박경주 대표

“어엿한 창작집단으로 인정을 받는, 맛과 향이 어우러진 샐러드가 되겠습니다.”

다문화 극단 ‘샐러드’의 박경주 대표(46·사진)는 9일 경향신문과의 인터뷰에서 “지난 10년이 힘들었던 만큼 행복한 10년을 꿈꾸겠다”며 이같이 말했다.

올해는 박 대표가 인터넷 다국어 대안언론인 이주노동자방송국을 설립해 이주민 지원 활동을 한 지 10년째 되는 해이다.2005년부터 이주노동자방송국 취재기자로서, 운영자로서 이주노동자 인권 문제를 알리는 데 전력을 다한 그는 2009년 다문화방송국 샐러드TV와 샐러드 극단으로 사업 방향을 전환했다. ‘문화의 다양성’에 초점을 맞춰야 이주민들의 고충이 더 잘 전달될 것이라고 판단했기 때문이다.

홍익대 미대를 나온 그는 애초 영화 제작에 꿈을 두고 있었다. 이주노동자 문제에 관심을 기울이게 된 계기는 독일 유학생활 때 맞닥뜨린 ‘신나치주의자’였다. 타 문화에 개방적인 줄 알았던 유럽에서 ‘황색인종 차별’을 느끼고 큰 충격을 받은 것이다. 2001년 귀국 후 이주노동자 문제가 이슈화되자 사진전 등을 통해 이주노동자 지원에 나섰고, 그걸로는 성이 차지 않아 다국어 방송국을 세우게 됐다.

박 대표는 2007년 2월 여수외국인보호소(출입국관리사무소) 화재로 이주노동자들이 희생된 사건이 발생했을 때 두 달간 밀착 취재했다. 이 사건은 박 대표를 극단 설립으로 이끌었다. “팩트(사실)만 갖고선 근본적인 문제를 해결할 수 없다는 걸 절감”해서다.

그는 2010년에 내놓은 실험극 <여수 처음 중간 끝>을 잊을 수 없다고 했다. 여수 사고에서 살아남은 이주노동자가 실제 기자회견하는 것으로 막이 올랐고, 파장 또한 있었기 때문이다. “희생자 유족 역을 맡은 이주민 단원들은 꿈속에 사고 희생자가 나타나는 심적 고통을 겪기도 했습니다. 그만큼 단원들이 몰입한 것이죠. 공연 중간에 무대 뒤에서 울기도 했습니다.”

극단 운영도 어려웠다. 공연 준비를 하는데 전기가 끊기고 공연장까지 올 차비가 없어 발을 동동 구르는 배우도 있었다. 박 대표는 그때마다 “참자, 버티자”를 반복했고, 지금은 그나마 단원들의 형편이 좀 나아져 창작에 몰두할 수 있다고 했다.

몽골, 필리핀, 중국, 키르기스스탄 등 출신의 결혼이주여성과 유학생으로 구성된 샐러드는 지난달 정부로부터 사회적기업으로 인증을 받았다.
