“The situation surrounding international marriage is different from the early days when the government was carrying out a project to marry a rural bachelor. However, the social system remains in the initial solution and shows the appearance of fascism in which the state power intervenes in the personal problems between the couple.”
Artist Park Kyong Ju (43) produced an updated version of “Lan’s Diary,” which sheds light on the pain and anxiety of immigrant women, by adding the stories of the Korean male victims. Regarding the reason for putting ‘Lan’s Diary Update’ on the theater stage on October 1-2, she said, “I wanted to reflect the position of men, the opposite side of immigrant women,” She recently presented the following diagnosis regarding the problems surrounding international marriage.
She said, “Men who have been victims of international marriage say that they are very distressed by prejudices such as incompetence, violent husbands, and perverted husbands being thrown at them. Marriage is a matter of responsibility and choice between a man and a woman, and it seems that this problem arises when the state power keeps intervening because immigrant women are weak,”
She continued, “In that respect, multicultural couples are like three people sleeping in a bedroom.” She explained that various human rights centers and government agencies do not listen to their husbands, and husbands who want to meet and solve problems are not even allowed to meet with their wives who have run away from home.
After graduating from the College of Fine Arts at Hongik University, artist Park Kyong Ju began her studies in Germany in 1993. She experienced a situation where it was difficult for strangers to take the subway in the evening because of the threat of neo-Nazi forces, and she became interested in migration issues by opening her eyes to the issue of miners and nurses dispatched to Germany.
This is also the background to the creation of Salad TV (former migrant worker broadcasting station), an internet multicultural broadcasting station, in 2005 while working on photos and videos dealing with immigrants after returning to Korea.
However, as a reporter for Salad TV, she closely covered the issue of immigration and encountered aspects that could not be conveyed through writing articles as they were. In early 2009, she founded Salad, a troupe made up of multinational migrant women, and she wrote and directed the ‘Unrespected Death Series’ and co-created with migrant women, ‘Immigration Women’s Korean Life Challenge’, etc.
The ‘Unrespected Death Series’ started with ‘Do You Remember Me?’, which dealt with the death of a miner despatched to Germany, and continued with ‘Yeosu Beginning, Middle the End’, which sheds light on the migrant workers who died in the Yeosu foreigner shelter fire. Since a total of three parts, including “Lan’s Diary,” based on the death of a Vietnamese woman who married internationally, which was performed in May of this year, have already been released, this “Lan’s Diary Update” is part 3.5.
She said, “Part 4, which will be released next year, is the last one,” and “I plan to complete the series with a story about the future.”
Artist Park said, “Theatrical Company Salad pursues cultural diversity through creative activities involving migrants,” and “It is in the same context to try to shed light on what is not receiving attention. Then, regarding this stage, “The number of victimized husbands keeps increasing, and in some ways, they may be more vulnerable. Helping them communicate their position through the play will have several effects,” she added. (ⒸYonhap News, 2011)

<사람들> ‘란의일기 개정판’ 박경주 작가 이주민 문제 파고드는 극작가 겸 연출가

“국제결혼을 둘러싼 상황은 농촌총각 장가 보내기 하던 초기 때와는 다른데, 사회시스템은 초기 해결방식에 머물러 부부 당사자 간의 문제에 국가 권력이 개입하는 파시즘의 모양새를 보이는 것입니다.”
10월 1-2일 ‘란의 일기 개정판’을 연극 무대에 올리는 박경주(43) 작가는 이주여성의 고통과 불안을 조명한 ‘란의 일기’에 피해 남성들의 사연을 더해 꾸민 개정판을 내놓은 이유에 대해 “이주여성의 상대측인 남성의 입장도 반영하고 싶었다”며 최근 국제결혼을 둘러싼 문제에 대해 이런 진단을 제시했다.
그는 “국제결혼 피해 남성들은 무능, 폭력 남편, 변태 남편 등의 편견이 자신들에게 던져지는 데 대해 너무 괴롭다고 한다”며 “결혼은 남녀 당사자 간의 책임과 선택의 문제인데, 국가 권력이 이주여성이 약자라는 이유로 자꾸 개입하고 관여하면서 이런 문제가 생기는 것 같다”고 말했다.
이어 “그런 측면에서 다문화 부부는 침실에 세명이 자는 것과 같다”며 각종 인권센터나 기관은 남편쪽 얘기는 들어주지 않고 만나서 해결하려는 남편은 가출한 아내와의 만남조차 허락되지 않는다고 설명했다.
박경주 작가는 홍대 미대를 졸업한 뒤 1993년 독일 유학 생활을 하면서 이방인은 저녁에 지하철을 타기 힘들 만큼 네오나치 세력이 위협적이었던 상황을 경험하고 파독 광부와 간호사 문제에도 눈을 떠 이주 문제에 관심을 갖게 됐다고 한다.
귀국후 이주민을 다룬 사진과 영상 작업을 하면서 2005년 인터넷 다문화방송 샐러드TV(옛 이주노동자방송국)를 만든 배경이기도 하다.
하지만, 스스로 샐러드TV의 기자로 이주 문제를 밀착 취재하면서 사실 그대로 전할 수 없는 측면들을 접하고 2009년초 다국적 이주여성들로 구성된 극단 샐러드를 창단, 자신이 극작 및 연출을 맡은 ‘존경받지 못한 죽음 시리즈’와 이주여성들과 공동 창작한 ‘이주여성 한국생활 도전기’ 등을 무대에 올렸다.
‘존경받지 못한 죽음 시리즈’는 파독 광부의 죽음을 다룬 작년 5월 ‘당신은 나를 기억하는가’를 시작으로 여수외국인보호소 화재로 숨진 이주노동자들을 조명한 2010년 9월의 ‘여수 처음 중간 끝’, 국제결혼한 베트남 여성의 죽음을 소재로 한 올해 5월 ‘란의 일기’까지 3부가 발표됐으며 이번 ‘란의 일기 개정판’은 3.5부인 셈이다.
그는 “내년에 선보일 4부가 마지막 편”이라며 “미래에 대한 이야기로 시리즈를 완성할 생각”이라고 말했다.
박 작가는 “극단 샐러드는 이주민이 참여하는 창작활동을 통해 문화 다양성을 추구한다”며 “관심을 받지 못하는 것을 조명하려는 것도 같은 맥락”이라고 전했다.
이어 이번 무대와 관련, “피해 남편들이 자꾸 늘고 있고 어찌보면 더 약자일 수도 있다”며 “그 분들이 자신의 입장을 연극을 통해 알리도록 하는 것도 여러가지 효과가 있을 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
