The rock band ‘Eureka’, made up of migrant workers of Myanmar nationality, held ‘What is life?’ on December 15th. After releasing the album, they stood on the Korean stage for the first time. At the performance held at the Ssamzie Space Baram concert hall in front of Hongik University, Eureka sang about the life of a worker who worked hard away from his hometown and touched the hearts of the audience.

Eureka was created in 1998 but took shape at the end of last year after some members returned home and suffered difficulties. Band leaders Sanaing (bass), Jotura (keyboards), Zeh (vocals), Tanjing (drums), Somotu (guitar), Sanyo (vocals), and Sotun (vocals), who also worked as professional musicians in Myanmar, were members in Bucheon and Gimpo. These are undocumented foreign workers who have lived in Korea for 5-8 years working in small factories in, Bupyeong and Ansan.
Sanaing was delighted, saying, “I made a band with the heart of giving joy to others at events like compatriots and came this far.”
They go back and forth between home and factory like a pendulum and suffer over 10 hours of hard labor a day, but make time for harmony on Sundays when they are not working. Most of the insignificant salary is sent back to their hometown, and they live a difficult and exhausting life economically, but music is a great help in sustaining such a life.
The songs raised in this kind of life are so touching. Among the 8 songs on the album, 4 songs including ‘Dream Road’ were written by Eureka members themselves and even added Korean lyrics. And the remaining four songs, including ‘What is life?’, were written by workers in Nepal, Thailand, and Nigeria, and composed by Korean and German composers.
The midwife for this album is Park Kyong Ju (34), who majored in photography and video at the University of the Arts Berlin, Germany. Artist Park, who planned the album to widely publicize the life and culture of migrant workers, said, “I want to satisfy their cultural needs and inform Koreans of their cultural power through this album and performance activities.”
Eureka’s playing and singing skills are comparable to most domestic rock bands. However, the reason why they refuse to appear on TV and have no choice but to remain in the underground is because of the ‘stigma’ of being an undocumented foreign worker. 이방인 노동자 설움을 노래하다

미얀마 국적의 이주 노동자들로 구성된 록 밴드 ‘유레카’가 12월15일 음반 ‘인생이란?(What is life?)’을 내놓으면서 처음으로 정식 국내 무대에 섰다. 홍익대 앞 쌈지스페이스 바람 공연장에서 열린 이날 공연에서 유레카는 고향 떠난 고달픈 노동자의 삶을 노래해 모여든 청중들의 심금을 울렸다.
“보고 싶은 우리의 고향 가족들은/ 잠깐 잊어버리고 열심히 일을 하자고/ 땀으로 이마에서 우리의 발가락까지 젖어도/ 믿어요 어두움 뒤에는 밝은 날이 온다는 걸….”(수록곡 ‘꿈의 길’ 가운데)
유레카는 1998년 만들어졌지만 구성원 중 일부가 본국으로 돌아가는 등 어려움을 겪어오다 지난해 말부터 지금의 꼴이 갖춰졌다. 미얀마에서 전문 연주가로도 활동했던 밴드의 리더 사나잉(베이스)을 비롯, 조뚜라(키보드), 쩌(보컬), 딴징(드럼), 소모뚜(기타), 사뇨(보컬), 소툰(보컬) 등 구성원들은 부천 김포 부평 안산 등지의 소규모 공장에서 제각각 일하고 있는, 한국생활 5~8년째의 불법체류자들이다.
사나잉은 “동포들끼리의 행사 같은 데서 남에게도 즐거움을 주자는 취지에서 밴드를 만들었는데 여기까지 왔다”며 “외국인 친구들의 아픔을 노래로 만들고 싶었는데 꿈을 이뤘다”며 기뻐했다.
이들은 집과 공장만을 시계추처럼 오가며 하루 10시간 이상 고된 노동에 시달리고 있지만 근무하지 않는 일요일에 짬을 내어 화음을 맞춰왔다. 얼마 되지 않는 월급의 대부분은 고향에 보내 경제적으로 힘들고 고단한 생활이지만 음악이 이런 삶을 지탱케 하는 큰 힘이 된다.
이런 삶에서 길어올린 곡들은 그만큼 감동을 준다. 음반에 수록된 8곡 가운데 ‘꿈의 길’ 등 4곡은 유레카 구성원들이 직접 곡을 만들고 한국어 가사까지 붙였으며, ‘인생이란?’ 등 나머지 네 곡은 네팔 태국 나이지리아 독일 등의 노동자 가수들의 작품이다.
이번 음반의 산파는 독일 베를린예술대에서 사진과 영상을 공부한 박경주씨(34). 이주 노동자들의 삶과 문화를 널리 알리기 위해 음반을 구상했다는 박씨는 “이번 음반과 공연 활동을 통해 이들의 문화적 욕구를 충족시켜주고 아울러 그들이 갖고 있는 문화적 힘을 한국인에게 알렸으면 한다”고 말했다.
유레카의 연주와 노래 실력은 웬만한 국내 록 밴드 못지않다. 그러나 이들이 TV 출연을 거부하고 언더그라운드에 남을 수밖에 없는 것은 불법체류자라는 ‘낙인’ 탓. 자칫 얼굴이 널리 알려져 법무부의 단속에라도 걸리면 고향으로 돌아가야 하기 때문이다. Ⓒ주간동아
