“They say that labor is sacred, but they seem to think that the stranger who does it for them is lowly.”

Photographer Park Kyong Ju (34, female) is holding a solo exhibition, “Working Holiday,” on the theme of the lives of migrant workers at the Insa Art Space in Gwanhun-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, starting on the 4th.

After graduating from Hongik University and studying in Germany in early 1993, she became interested in the issue of migrant workers because of her own experience of acutely realizing the wall of racial discrimination in German society.

“As my student visa expired after graduation, it was difficult to stay in Germany right away. It was only then that I began to see the reality of my compatriots who hovered around the periphery of German society as nurses and miners, and of foreign workers who were often looked down upon while doing ‘dirty, difficult, and dangerous’ work.”

From this point on, Ms. Park is said to have filmed endlessly the expressionless faces of migrant workers who lined up in front of the office from early in the morning to visit the immigration office in the industrial zone outside Berlin with a camera.

Ms. Park, who returned to Korea in early March this year, said, “I wanted to publicize through the exhibition the fact that we, too, can become perpetrators of racial discrimination while looking at the reality of foreign workers in Korea.” said.

이주노동자 사진전 여는 박경주씨

“노동은 신성한 것이라고 말하면서도, 정작 그것을 대신해주는 이방인은 천하다고 생각하는 모양입니다.”

4일부터 서울 종로구 관훈동 ‘인사미술공간’에서 이주노동자의 삶을 주제로 개인전 ‘워킹 홀리데이’를 여는 사진작가 박경주(34·여)씨.

홍익대 미대를 나와 1993년초 독일로 유학을 떠났던 그가 이주노동자 문제에 관심을 갖게 된 것은 독일 사회의 인종차별의 벽을 뼈저리게 실감한 그 자신의 경험 때문이다.

“졸업으로 유학생 비자가 만료되면서 당장 독일 땅에 머무는 것 자체가 어렵더군요. 그제서야 간호사와 광부 등으로 독일사회 주변부를 맴도는 동포들과 ‘더럽고 힘들고 위험한’ 일을 하면서도 천대받기 일쑤인 외국인 노동자들의 현실이 조금씩 눈에 들어왔습니다.”

이 때부터 박씨는 카메라를 들고 베를린 시내 외곽 공장지대에 있는 출입국관리소를 찾아 체류비자를 받기 위해 아침 일찍부터 관리소 앞에 줄지어 서있는 이주노동자들의 무표정한 얼굴 등을 끝도 없이 필름에 담았다고 한다.

올 3월초 귀국한 박씨는 “국내 외국인 노동자들의 현실을 보면서 우리도 인종차별의 가해자가 될 수 있다는 사실을 전시회를 통해 알리고 싶었다”며 “한동안 외국인 노동자를 주제로 한 작품 활동을 계속하게 될 것”이라고 말했다.

오는 15일까지 이어지는 박씨의 개인전에서는 이주노동자의 삶을 담은 그의 사진작품 60여점과 함께 이주노동자에게 꼬리표 처럼 따라다니는 ‘어디서 왔느나’는 질문을 도리어 이주노동자가 묻는 ‘당신은 어디서 오셨습니까’ 등 실험적인 영상을 감상할 수 있다. Ⓒ 한겨레
