Introduction of the Lan’s Diary Project

Lan’s Diary Project is the artist Park Kyong Ju’s research project of a diary written by a Vietnamese migrant woman Tran Thanh Lan. The artist recorded the deceased migrant woman Tran Thanh Lan’s 26 day life by piecing together Vietnamese words that she couldn’t understand as if she had been an archeologist.

Diary written on Feb. 2nd of 2008 firstly appeared in the world beside dead body of Tran Thanh Lan, a Vietnamese woman who migrated to Korea. Total 16 page Diary on both sides of paper contains detailed records of her 26 day marriage written in Vietnamese. Diary with her very fine handwritten letters were 8 pieces of paper with edges torn. Diary was neglected during an initial investigation. On April 2nd of 2008, Diary in incomplete Korean costume had to watch that a defendant get a suspended prosecution. In July of 2016, Diary was reborn through hundreds of page drawing work and changed its costume to perfect Korean through strenuous efforts. Diary filed a criminal complaint again to reveal truth on December 28th of 2018 but the prosecution didn’t indict the defendant due to lack of evidence. Diary didn’t yield to this result. Diary filed a motion in a High Court just four days before statute of limitations. However, High Court denied the motion on May 25th of 2018. Eventually, statute of limitations ran out four days later on May 29th and Diary was laid to rest.

Background information on the project

The artist Park Kyong Ju covered Tran Thanh Lan’s death in March of 2008 and reported on Salad TV(formerly Migrant Workers’ TV), an alternative media that she ran at that time. She wrote three play scripts based on the deceased’s diary and staged them, and has focused on film production for last 8 years.

2005~2009 Author Park wrote and reported on migrant workers TV, focusing on the issue of undocumented migrant workers and refugees.

2009~ 2012 Author Park wrote and reported on SALAD TV, focusing on migrant women, migrants, and cultural diversity issues.

란의 일기 프로젝트는 베트남 이주여성 쩐탄란의 유품인 일기에 대한 박경주 작가의 연구 프로젝트이다. 작가는 고인이 된 이주여성 쩐탄란의 26일의 삶을 마치 고고학자가 된 것처럼 알지도 못하는 베트남어 단어들을 조합하며 기록했다.

2008년 2월 6일 일기는 베트남 이주여성 쩐탄란의 주검 옆에서 처음으로 세상에 얼굴을 내밀었다. 총8장 – 16페이지의 몸을 가진 일기는 신혼생활 26일을 베트남어로 상세히 기록하고 있다. 고인의 깨알 같은 손글씨로 작성된 일기는 가장자리가 찢어진 상태로 8장의 낱장으로 나눠져 있다. 일기는 초동 수사에서 등한시됐다. 2008년 4월 2일, 일기는 불완전한 한국어 의상을 입은 채 피의자의 기소유예 처분을 지켜봐야 했다. 2016년 7월, 일기는 피나는 노력 끝에 수백장의 그림 작업을 통해 재탄생 됐다. 일기는 자신이 거의 완벽한 한국어 의상으로 갈아입었다고 생각했다. 자신감을 얻은 일기는 2018년 12월 28일, 진실을 밝히기 위해 형사고소장을 다시 접수 했다. 그러나 검찰은 증거불충분을 이유로 피의자를 불기소 처분했다. 일기는 이에 굴복하지 않았다. 공소시효를 겨우 4일 앞둔 시점에 일기는 고등법원에 재정신청을 했다. 그러나 2018년 5월 25일 대구고등법원이 기각결정을 내렸다. 결국 4일 후인 5월 29일 공소시효가 마감됐고 일기는 영변에 들었다.

프로젝트 배경 정보

박경주 작가는 2008년 3월 쩐탄란의 죽음을 취재하며 당시 운영하던 대안 매체인 샐러드TV(구 이주노동자방송국)에 보도했다. 이후 고인의 일기를 바탕으로 3개의 극본을 써서 연출했고, 지난 8년간 에세이 영화 제작에 몰두해오고 있다.

2005~2009년 박 작가는 미등록 이주노동자와 난민 문제를 중심으로 이주노동자 TV에 글을 쓰고 보도했다.

2009~ 2012 박 작가는 이주여성, 이주민, 문화다양성 문제를 중심으로 SALAD TV에 글을 쓰고 보도했다.
