Introduction: Looking for Lan (2021) is a collection of reportage fiction by writer Park Kyong Ju. It is based on the death case of a Vietnamese migrant woman that the author investigated over a long period of time. As an alternative-media journalist, Park reported on the case of Trần Thanh Lan, a Vietnamese migrant woman who died just 26 days after entering South Korea through an international marriage arrangement that amounted to human trafficking. Later, Park personally filed a criminal complaint on behalf of the deceased’s mother. However, the complaint was submitted only one month before the statute of limitations expired and the case was not prosecuted due to “insufficient evidence.” The two short stories included in this collection, “Addiction” and “Family,” show the beginning and the end of a decade-long investigation.

Park Kyong Ju indirectly narrativized the knowledge and experiences she accumulated during the research process for her essay film Looking for Lan. She maintains the investigative sensibility of reportage, but she does not adopt the definitive delivery of facts that reportage fiction often demands. Instead, she builds a narrative form whose center of gravity lies in uncertainty and gaps, while adding layers of fictional construction. As a result, rather than presenting “the facts as they are” in a single voice, she leads readers to confront the truth by blurring the boundary between what can be said and what cannot be said.

The book also includes photographs the author took herself during the research journey. These images expand the volume into a visual register that records the residues of the case, its locations, and its encounters.

소개: 『란을 찾아서』(2021)는 박경주 작가가 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 취재해온 한 베트남 이주 여성의 사망 사건을 바탕으로 창작한 르포소설집(reportage fiction)이다. 작가는 대안 언론 기자로서 인신매매성 국제결혼을 통해 한국에 입국한 지 26일 만에 사망한 베트남 이주 여성 쩐탄란의 사건을 취재·보도했고, 이후에는 고인의 모친을 대리해 직접 고소를 진행했다. 그러나 공소시효를 한 달 앞두고 접수한 형사고발은 ‘증거 불충분’으로 불기소 처분되었다. 이 르포소설집에 수록된 두 단편 「중독」과 「가족」은 10년에 걸쳐 진행된 취재의 시작과 끝을 보여준다.

박경주 작가는 자신의 에세이 영화 〈란을 찾아서〉 제작을 위한 리서치 과정에서 축적된 지식과 경험을 우회적으로 서사화했다. 르포르타주의 리서치 감각을 유지하되, 사실의 단정적 전달을 요구하는 르포 픽션이 아니라 허구적 구성의 층위를 더한 불확실성과 공백의 서사적 형식을 무게 중심축으로 선택했다. 이를 통해 작가는 ‘있는 사실’을 단일한 목소리로 발신하기보다는, ‘말해질 수 있는 것과 말해질 수 없는 것의 경계’를 모호하게 드러내는 방식으로 독자들이 진실을 마주하게 한다.

또한 작가가 리서치 여정에서 직접 촬영한 사진들을 함께 수록함으로써, 이 책은 사건과 장소, 만남의 잔여를 기록하는 시각적 레지스터로 확장된다.
