Reportage of Tran Thanh Lan’s death

Social Media Project, 2008

Reportage of Tran Thanh Lan’s Death (2008) is a social-media journalism project produced by Kyong Ju Park between February 20 and March 30, 2008. Before Lan’s mother arrived in South Korea, Park consulted Vietnamese local news reports and conducted interviews with civic groups to prepare a special feature. When Lan’s mother (Huan Kim An) visited the police station in Korea and received her daughter’s diary as a personal belonging, the diary was faxed to Park on the same day at the request of the fact-finding committee.

At the time, the first translation was completed by Bhu Thi Tuan, editor-in-chief of the Vietnamese service of Salad TV (formerly Migrant Workers Broadcasting Station), an internet media outlet operated by Park. Because the diary was handwritten and contained typos, translation required careful interpretation. Park continued reporting with follow-up articles and video news until Lan’s mother left Korea. The byline “Maebama” is Park’s reporting pen name; in Burmese, it means “Miss Burma.
