Introduction: A collection of plays by Park Kyong Ju, the head of the theater company Salad. It contains works based on the diary of Tran Thanh Lan. Lan’s Diary: A Collection of Plays (2019) brings together Park Kyong Ju’s plays developed within the long-term research-based practice Lan’s Diary Project (2008–present). Taking the diary of Vietnamese migrant woman Tran Thanh Lan as its point of departure, these works translate fragmented personal traces into the public language of theatre—while making visible, through the structure of performance itself, who is able to speak and in what way. Rather than simply “explaining” an event, the plays foreground the conditions through which testimony, translation, recording, and public address are produced, and ask after the ethics of representation.
The three included works—Lan’s Diary (written 2011; premiered 2011), Lan’s Diary Revised Edition Version 2.0) (written 2011; premiered 2013), and Statute of Limitations (written 2018; premiered 2018)—trace the project’s shifts in research, perspective, and theatrical device. Lan’s Diary was written with limited information available at the time, drawing on a first translated version of the diary, and was created to speak from the position of the migrant woman as victim; it premiered in 2011 with a cast of migrant actors. Lan’s Diary 2.0 was developed through interviews with Korean men affected by international marriage arrangements, using their voices to expose the deceptive realities of trafficking-like transnational marriage; it premiered in 2013 with a cast of three Korean male actors. Criminal Trial / Statute of Limitations was written after extensive field research in Vietnam (2016–2018), study of police investigation materials, and in-depth analysis of the diary, theatrically summoning a “site inspection” of the suspect that never took place in reality. The play premiered in 2018 as a performance marking the tenth anniversary of Tran Thanh Lan’s death, staged with three actresses—migrant women and Korean women.
