‘Lan’s Diary Update’, a multicultural play depicting victims of international marriage

Men who have been victimized by international marriages appear in a play that tells their stories.

‘Lan’s Diary Update’(playwright by and directed by Park Kyong Ju) is to be held on October 1-2 at the ‘Theater Laboratory Hyehwa-dong 1st Street’ small theater. In this performance, six male victims of international marriage, including Ahn Jae-Seong, who runs the Internet Cafe “International Marriage Victim Center,” and six cafe members, including Lee Chae-moon and Lee Dong-Wook, will appear.

Salad, a troupe made up of multinational migrant women, dramatizes the real case of a Vietnamese woman who died after falling from an apartment just a month after arriving in Korea. ‘Lan’s Diary’ (playwright by and directed by Park Kyong Ju), which sheds light on the pain and anxiety of immigrant women, will be performed on the street in front of Dongseong High School near the small theater.

In a small theater at the same time, the male victims show a one-act play called “International Marriage is Crazy” and a talk show, and are decorated in a way to communicate with the audience. The 15-minute one-act play tells the story of a man who goes abroad and is introduced to a local woman through an international marriage broker. After returning home, he hears that “the woman refuses to enter the country” and quarrels with the broker. The cast made up of men who suffered from international marriages, spent time every weekend for a month to practice.

Audiences can ask questions to the male victims who appeared on the talk show through their smartphones while watching “Lan’s Diary” performed on the street with a smartphone and a projection video.

Ahn Jae-Seong, one of the performers, said, “There should be no damage to foreign women due to international marriage. However, the damage to Korean men is too great, and innocent men are also stigmatized as perpetrators,”

Park Kyong Ju, who was in charge of writing and directing the script, said, “As ‘Lan’s Diary’ contains the migrant woman’s point of view, I wanted to reflect the male partner’s point of view as well.” She explained the background of the production of the work, saying, “I wanted to get rid of this concern, as there is a risk of becoming xenophobic if men who had an international marriage with an open mind but were victimized are pointed at as perpetrators by the attention.”

This performance was invited to the 13th Seoul Marginal Theater Festival, and the entrance fee is 10,000-20,000 won. (ⒸYonhap News, 2011)

국제결혼 피해 남성들 연극무대 오른다

국제결혼 피해 그린 다문화연극 ‘란의 일기 개정판’

국제결혼으로 피해를 본 남성들이 자신들의 이야기를 담은 연극에 직접 출연한다.

10월 1-2일 ‘연극실험실 혜화동1번지’ 소극장에서 열리는 ‘란의 일기 개정판’ 에는 인터넷 카페 ‘국제결혼피해센터’를 운영 중인 안재성씨와 카페 회원인 이채문, 이동욱씨 등 국제결혼 피해 남성 6명이 출연한다.

다국적 이주여성들로 구성된 극단 샐러드가 입국 한달 만에 아파트에서 추락사한 베트남 여성의 실제 사건을 극화해 지난 5월 무대에 올린 ‘란의 일기’에 피해 남성들의 사연을 더해 보여주는 방식으로 발전시킨 작품이다.

이 작품은 이주여성의 고통과 불안을 조명한 ‘란의 일기'(극작 및 연출 박경주)가 소극장 주변 동성고교 앞 길거리에서 공연되는 동안 소극장 내에서는 피해 남성들이 ‘국제결혼은 미친 짓이다’라는 단막극과 토크쇼를 선보이며 관객들과 소통하는 방식으로 꾸며진다.

15분 분량의 단막극은 해외에 가 국제결혼 중개업자를 통해 현지 여성을 소개받고 며칠만에 결혼한 남성이 귀국 뒤 “여성이 입국을 거부한다”는 얘기를 전해듣고 중개업자와 티격태격하며 전개되는 이야기를 담고 있다.

국제결혼 피해 남성들로 구성된 출연진은 한달간 매주말 시간을 내 연습에 임했다고 한다.

관객은 길거리에서 진행되는 ‘란의 일기’를 스마트폰과 프로젝션 영상으로 함께 보면서 토크쇼에 출연한 피해 남성들에게 스마트폰을 통해 질문을 던질 수도 있다.

출연자 중 한명인 안재성씨는 “국제결혼으로 인한 외국인 여성 피해도 없어야 하겠지만 한국 남성들의 피해도 너무나 크고 게다가 무고한 남성들이 가해자로 오명을 쓰기도 한다”며 “이를 알려야 하겠다는 생각에서 출연하는 것”이라고 말했다.

극작 및 연출을 맡은 박경주씨는 “‘란의 일기’가 이주여성의 입장을 담았다는 점에서 상대측인 남성의 입장도 반영하고 싶었다”며 “열린 마음으로 국제결혼을 했다가 피해를 본 남성들을 주위에서 가해자로 손가락질하면 그들이 외국인 혐오로 흐를 위험성이 있는 만큼 이런 우려를 없애고 싶은 마음도 있었다”고 작품 제작 배경을 설명했다.

이번 공연은 ‘제13회 서울변방연극제’의 초청작으로, 입장료는 1만-2만원.
