Archaeological project, 2016~2018

Archaeological Study of Lan’s Diary (2016–2018) is an “archaeological” research process that underpins Park Kyong Ju’s long-term practice Lan’s Diary Project. Working toward a documentary film, Park undertook a detailed study of the diary with the support of a Vietnamese translator, beginning from a more complete second translation.

The translated text was then converted into hundreds of drawings/storyboards made day by day. Through the act of drawing—treating each scene as a fragment to be excavated, compared, and reassembled—Park generated subsequent rounds of translation (third, fourth, and onward), arriving at a final, refined sixth version. Park names this method “archaeological research”: a way of translating by piecing together shattered scenes into a legible sequence, while keeping the labor of reconstruction visible.

〈란의 일기 고고학적 연구〉(2016–2018)는 박경주의 장기 프로젝트 〈란의 일기 프로젝트〉를 지탱하는 ‘고고학적’ 리서치 과정이다. 작가는 다큐멘터리 영화 제작을 결심한 뒤, 베트남어를 직접 읽을 수 없는 조건에서 베트남인 번역자의 도움을 받아 두 번째 보완·완성 번역본을 확보하고, 이를 바탕으로 일기의 장면들을 세밀하게 연구했다.

이 번역 텍스트는 매일 축적되는 수백 장의 그림/스토리보드로 전환되었고, 그리는 과정에서 분절되어 있던 장면들이 보다 명확한 형태로 드러나며 3차, 4차…의 추가 번역을 촉발했다. 최종적으로 작가는 여섯 번째 번역본에 이르러 텍스트를 정교하게 윤색한다. 산산조각 난 장면들을 발굴하듯 짜 맞추고 조합해 번역을 갱신해가는 이 과정을 작가는 ‘고고학적 연구’라 명명한다..
