Park Kyong Ju (born in 1968, in Seoul) has continued creative activities focusing on the artistic statements of a social minority based on her overall understanding of the fields of humanities and culture and arts. She has explored and actively embraced new media as well as art in various fields, and collaborated with social minorities. She is interested in creating a cultural and artistic environment where she can have a sense of the themes and boundaries of various fields. She is actively engaged in creative activities as the founder and representative of the creative group Salad, which was established in 2009.
In particular, since 1995, Park Kyong Ju has been carrying out various ‘voice sculpture‘ projects to deliver the voices of the socially underprivileged. She has been creating with an interest in women, migrants, and refugees, and has paid attention to making their ‘voices’ and ‘bodies’ the main structures of voice sculptures. If the central idea of Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), the founder of the concept of ‘social sculpture’, was language, thought, and action, the central idea of Park Kyong Ju’s ‘voice sculpture‘ is the voice of the socially underprivileged. In other words, for the sake of social change, the process of ensuring that the voices of the socially underprivileged are articulated well on the social stage, the public realm, through the body of the person concerned is the part that artist is most focused on. Over the past 30 years, the artist has prodigiously transformed herself while exploring various fields such as visual arts, performing arts, community art, public art, film, multimedia installation, internet media operation, art company operation, and social innovation. It is the result of multidisciplinary study and research for the method and medium in which ‘voice’ can ‘speak’ best.

박경주 – 목소리 조각가

박경주(1968년 서울생)는 인문 및 문화예술 분야를 탐구하고 이에 대한 전반적인 이해를 바탕으로 사회적 소수자들의 예술적 진술에 초점을 둔 창작 활동을 이어오고 있다. 작가는 미술뿐만 아니라 뉴미디어를 탐구하고 적극적으로 수용하며 사회적 소수자들과 협업 해왔으며 다양한 분야의 주제와 경계를 느낄 수 있는 문화 예술적 환경을 조성하는 데 관심이 있다. 현재 2009년 설립한 창작집단 샐러드의 설립자이자 대표로서 활발한 창작활동을 펼치고 있다.
특히 박경주는 독일 유학시절인 1995년부터 현재까지 사회적 약자들의 목소리를 전달하기 위한 다양한 ‘목소리 조각’ 프로젝트를 진행해 왔다. 작가는 여성과 이주민, 난민에 대해 관심을 두며 창작해 왔는데 이들의 ‘목소리’와 ‘신체’가 ‘목소리 조각’의 주요 구조물이 되도록 하는데 주목하여 왔다. ‘사회적 조각’ 개념의 창시자인 요셉 보이스 (Joseph Beuys, 1921-1986) 의 중심 아이디어가 언어, 생각, 행동이었다면, 박경주 작가의 ‘목소리 조각’의 중심 아이디어는 사회적 약자 당사자의 목소리 발화에 있다. 즉 사회의 변화를 위해서 사회적 약자의 목소리가 당사자의 신체를 통해 공공의 영역인 사회 무대에서 잘 발화되도록 하는 과정이 작가가 가장 중점을 두고 있는 부분이다. 작가가 지난 30년 간 시각예술, 공연예술, 커뮤니티 아트, 공공예술, 영화, 멀티미디어 설치, 인터넷언론 운영, 예술기업 운영, 사회혁신 등 다양한 분야를 섭렵하면서 변화무쌍하게 자신의 모습을 변신해 온 것은 ‘목소리’가 가장 잘 ‘발화’할 수 있는 방법과 매체를 다학제적으로 연구하며 모색한 결과다.
